Review of Chefchaouen, Morocco
Chefchaouen is a mountian town close to Tangiers, but a million miles away
in terms of style attitude and ambience. Chefchaouen is a beautifully whitewashed
town with a reputation for safety and a warm but not overpowering welcome
to tourists, unlike many other cities in Morocco where you get 'too much of
a good thing'. Here in Chef the pace is far more relaxed. We suspect that
might be due to the kif mountains which surround the town. They are famously
the centre of North Africa's cannabis trade.
There are only a few restaurants in Chef but an excellent market to buy fresh Moroccan produce. During the day the principal activities are exploring the maze of streets, buying nick-nacks and sitting around watching the world go by. Alternatively the mountains are fabulous for talking walks and seeing the nature of Morocco up close.
Hotels in Chefchaouen
Many hotels have roof terraces which is where the visitors congregate and hang out at night. People make their own fun, playing games and guitars as the bats flutter around in the darkness.
Chefchauen has totally pure drigking water that is safe for visitors to drink due to the mountain springs. Of all the towns in Morocco Chefchaouen is probably the most ideal spot to unwind and recharge your emotional batteries.
And once you are fully recharged, pull on your walking boots and head out into the hills, exploring ancient trackways and stunning vistas which seem to present themselves at every turn. A photographers delight, the late afternoon sun falling on rich red soil provides images like no other. Morocco is a great country and the treasures of Chefchaouen should not be ignored.
