Review of Marrakech, Morocco
Standing
at midnight in the middle of the Jemaa el Fna, the great open square in the
heart of Marrakech is as good a place as any to enjoy one of those "We're
not in Kansas anymore Toto" moments.
Marrakech is quite simply breathtaking. From the hustle and bustle of the souk where you can buy everything your heart desires (so long as all your heart's desires are made of wood or brass and ornately inlaid with fine filigree) to the cool calm and grace of the Koutoubia mosque which is visible from almost anywhere in Marrakech, standing as useful marker when you are getting lost. The Majorelle gardens are a reminder of the french colonial past that are also very enjoyable. We really enjoyed a guided tour of the city ramparts of Marrakech which stretch for over six miles..
The people are really what make Marrakech so special. When you visit, take the time to talk to people. Enjoy the banter and ask questions. Everyone speaks french and many people speak excellent english.
I remember a long conversation with one man who spoke lovingly with plenty of detail of my hometown and the things he used to do there when he was a young tourist visiting my homeland himself. After half an hour he admiotted it was a sales technique and that he had never left Marrakech in his life.
You will also find quite a few spanish speakers in the city. The food is wonderful. A great fusion of North Africa, Arabia and the Med, with flavours from each. Take a vacation to Marrakech and see, hear smell and taste for yourself why Marrakech is one of the greatest cities.
