Hurghada Marriott Beach Resort
Located
about 20 minutes by mini-bus taxi from the centre of town, this tranquil haven
is just what you need to get away from it all and relax. I visited the Hurghada
Marriott Beach resort hotel over Christmas 2002 when it had just been completed.
With virtually no guests over Christmas we had on average 4 staff to each
guest and I experienced just the right level of service, i.e. there when you
needed it! I had booked a half-board 5 star holiday through teletext with
Hayes and Jarvis and was keen to get away from the Christmas commercial explosion
in London.
The Hurghada Marriott Beach Resort hotel had immaculate spacious rooms each with a balcony and enough room to sit and enjoy the view of the lagoon and the red sea beyond. There were two average sized pools that were absolutely freezing! The buffet was sufficient if you wanted to stay within the confines of the hotel and the sea safe and sheltered with ample sunbathing facilities and a small gym nearby.
Hurghada Town
Access to the main drag of the town was via a minibus-taxi and travellers beware! Check that you have the right change (E£20) as the taxi drivers will try and pull a fast one because the E£20 looks very much like E£200, so stand your ground when they try to ask for more or just get out and walk away. All tourists get heckled requests to come into the various shops along the main street, but you can just ignore or have a look, the people are extremely friendly and you will come to no harm, it is strictly at-arms-length behaviour. I did visit one of the clubs in the town, but unless you have a penchant for sentimental tunes avoid at all costs!
The people are warm and helpful and although Hurghada town is nothing more than a strip of touristy stores in the desert, the Marriott Beach hotel was wonderful and if you want to feel relaxed, safe and unhassled and simply enjoy the diving and sunshine, then the Hurghada Marriott Beach Resort is for you.
