Bayeux Review
Bayeux is famous for its Abbey and the Bayeux tapestry which is displayed in a museum in the centre of town. Small enough to explore in half a day, Bayeux has a number of excellent local restaurants making an evening stay a very attractive option..
Visiting Bayeux
The town is actually quite small and has two major shopping streets full of an eclectic mix of old style shops and modern boutiques. Highlights are the patisseries and the wine merchants, both offering excellent produce at bargain prices. There is a tourist advice centre in the centre of Bayeux in the old fish market building by the river that flows through the middle of bayeux
Restaurants in Bayeux
Many restaurants in this part of Normandy serve the local specialities of Fois Gras starters and fish based main courses. We ate twice in Bayeux and were very pleased with the food. Our tip is to ask a taxi driver for a restaurant selling traditional regional cuisine.
Getting to Bayeux
Close to the french Normandy Coast Bayeux is on the major E46 (N13) road.
Staying in Bayeux
We stayed at the wonderful Chateau De Bellefontaine which is only 10 minutes walk from town. The Chateau is set south east of the centre of Bayeux just outside the ring road on the Rue De Bellefontaine in lovely grounds with a small lake and with swans. There are modern apartments with very luxurious facilities from around 120 euros per night off season, rising to 180 per night in high season.
