Hotel Negresco Reviewed
When
I was just 17 years old I cycled from England to France with a couple of friends
and after some adventures ended up on the Cote D'Azur in Nice. I vividly remember
on hot afternoon, lying on the beach, looking back at the facade of the Hotel
Negresco and saying to myself "Someday I will be able to afford to stay
there." 20 years later I fulfilled that dream.
The Hotel Negresco is recognised as one of France's National Historic Monuments. built in 1912, The Hotel Negresco is located on the seafront at 37, Promenade des Anglais but you cannot miss it because the name Negresco is on the facade in letters 50 feet high.
My wife and I were greeted by friendly doormen who were able to tell us pretty much anything we or any of the guests wanted to know in pretty much every european language there was.
The rooms of the Negresco are furnished to represent different periods in french history. Our Art Deco room had all the amenities you would expect from a five star hotel. The view out over the bay of angels was a glorious way to start the day before slow days exploring the sophistication of the resorts.
The Hotel Negresco has 2 restaurants and the food was exceptional. Jan said it was the third best meal she had ever eaten (after a fish supper at Rick Steins in Padstow and a Roast Dinner her mum used to make! - praise indeed!)
Inside the Negresco it is all luxury. I imagined Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn were going to walk through the foyer at any moment. The staff offered us a great guided tour of the place which is really like a museum as much as a hotel.
Other hotels in nice are available. You could stay at the Holiday Inn Nice or the Massenet Hotel or the Splendid or Excelsior, but if you are in Nice why settle for anything other than the Negresco?
