Torrington, Devon, England
A market town with a lot of history and a love of setting fire to things.
We had an amazing weekend in Great Torrington. The museum of the civil war is fantasticly detailed, but the highlight was attending the biggest bonfire I have ever witnessed. They burned a massive wooden replica of Nelson's ship the Victory. It was serious.
Great Torrington has wonderful views over the Devon countryside and being just 20 minutes drive from the sea, is a great base. You can learn to surf at Westward Ho! which is the only village with an exclamation mark in it.
We also hired bicycles and rode along the tarka trail (a disused railway line that has been turned into a lovely cycle path) to Bideford. From here you can catch the ferry to Lundy.
Great Torrington is an excellent town to stay in on holiday.
