Windsor
We went to Windsor near London in July and had a wonderful time.
The town centre is beautiful although you do pass by some less attractive parts on your way from the airport.
Windsor is only 20 minutes from Heathrow airport which is good for getting there but not so good when the planes come over. The noise can be a bit intrusive on an otherwise tranquil scene.
We stayed at Ye Harte and Garter which is the inn named in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor.
This link to literary heritage excuses the odd raised floorboard and warped window frame. Overall the hotel is just about worthy of 4 stars. There were a few problems with loud creaks and noise from pipes at night but this was to be expected after 500 years.
The staff were mostly eastern european but everyone was friendly and eager to help us get the most from our vacation
Step out of the front door and you are directly below the massive walls of Windsor Castle. Wow, what a sight. This is the queen's home and is vast. We spent a whole day exploring and were enchanted by it all.
In the evening there are lots of restaurants and pubs to visit and a theatre. It was a shame they didn't actually perform Shakespeare's Merry Wives there as this would have been a great treat, although the comedy we did see was hilarious.
