Agios Nikolaos Crete Review
Agios Nikolaos is the biggest, most bustling resort on the north eastern
coast of the island of Crete. It lies along the sheletered western end of
Mirabello bay.
With the surprising beauty of Voulismeni Lake in the heart of town According
to the mythology, the bathtub of the goddess Athena, Agios Nikolaos is full
of surprises. Firstly don't worry about the pronunciation. Everyone (including
the Bus Drivers call it "Ag Nik")
The beaches of Agios Nikolaos
The beaches of Agios Nikolaos are good and sandy but because of this are very crowded in high season. If you want to go to a reasonably quiet beach it is best to leave the town. Take the road toward Sitia anbd try Ammoudara beach, Kalo Horiobeach or Istro beach.
Accommodation in Agios Nikolaos
In the peak season it is very hard to find spur of the moment accommodation. However, if you pre-book there are a wide variety of high quality hotels and the price range is better than on many other islands off Greece.
Restaurants in Agios Nikolaos
Bythe harbour and around Voulismeni lake are the tourist restaurants which serve little other than overpriced dross to a largely indifferent clientelle. However, head up the hill for bettetr quality meals. Don't miss Ouzeri Barko onn Lassithiou street.
Shopping in Agios Nikolaos
There are plenty of shops and you really can find everything for sale in Agios Nikolaos. Lots of banks and cashpoints so no problems with money.
Nightlife in Agios Nikolaos
The town centre gets really busy at night. Agios Nikolaos can feel a bit like Faliraki during high season, with plenty of youngsters looking for anything goes fun. However, they stay tightly concentrated in the few central streets allowing everyone else to enjoy themselves with more leisurely pursuits.
