Georgioupolis Crete Review

Georgioupolis is a small to medium sized resort on the north western coast of the island of Crete.

With the undisputed beauty of the small sheltered Kalivaki beach, the backdrop of the stunning White mountains behind and the warm scent of the giant eucalyptus trees, the visitor to Georgioupolis has much to be grateful for.

terrapinIn addition, there are wild terrapins to watch on the Almiros river (this is a real hidden treasure sadly ignored by most visitors to Georgioupolis), plus a genuinely warm welcome to be looked forward too. The locals really do make the effort to make guests feel welcome. We particularly liked the greetings given by both the Captain who owns the taverna on Kalivaki beach, and then there was the amazing Mike who owns and runs the Oasis on Perastikos beach.

Georgioupolis beachThe beaches of Georgioupolis are all fine sand, but right at the section by the main part of town the sun beds are crowded a bit close together. The mountain spring water from the three rivers can make swimming in the sea a colder experience than you might have suspected.

For food, you will find a bit of a mixed bag in Georgioupolis. The bars on the town square should be avoided for anything other than drinks and peanuts. Instead head east from the square and follow the alleyway on your right leading down to Poseidon fish restaurant which is an utter delight for fish lovers. They don't do anything fancy, simply grilling which ever fish you chose from the days catch. The house wine is superior and the courtyard ambience is great.

Fanis restaurant close to the sea by the Olmiros river does the best squid, cuttlefish and Octopus dishes, and the also offer traditional side dishes other than the ubiquitous chips and greek salad.

For breakfast in Georgioupolis I recommend 'The cotton club' on the waterfront where they really know how to pamper you and gently removed the Ouzo induced hangovers with great music on the stereo and old editions of Q magazine for you to read.

There is not much in the way of water sports in Georgioupolis but a mile along the beach you will find sailing, windsurfing, paragliding and banana boat rides.

I have focused on the positive aspects of Georgioupolis in this review, because the place is pretty good fun overall. Most of the visitors are from England, Germany and Scandinavia. A good mix of families with young children, and couples of all ages.
