Vilamendhoo Island Resort, Maldives - Reviewed
Review of Vilamendhoo Island Resort, Ari Atoll , Maldives
We
flew in from rainy London on a ten hour flight and landed in a tropical heatwave
at Male International. The airport is small and relaxed, a good mix of western
and Island. We had a short bus ride (across the main runway) to the seaplane
terminal where we boarded a red 'bus' which flew us the 25 minute journey
to Vilamendhoo. What a spectacular flight. It was noisy but the sea looked
just like you always imagined the tropics would look like. We landed on the
water and then got onto the island.
We were shown to our beachfront bungalow which had air conditioning, hot &
cold running water, a well stocked mini bar, a hair dryer, and quite bizarrely,
a television set! There were about 140 bungalows around the island along with
restaurants and bars, a disco, dive school and sailing school. There is no
pool, but the sea is safe because of the reef encircling the island and is
full of interesting coral and fish.
Snorkelling is what Vilamendhoo Island Resort is really all about. Put on your goggles and snorkel and go stare in wonder at an alien world of colour and beauty unmatched on dry land. The fish dont mind you at all so you can get really close if you want.
We also did enjoy the excursions to nearby other islands and the fishing trips were good fun although everyone except me actually caught a fish. The problem was that in the extreme heat we sometimes had no energy for anything except lying flat on our backs. We would recommend you choose your time of year carefully.
