Tea Factory, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, Vacation Review

The Hill Country is the most beautiful part of Sri Lanka.

tea picking at nuwara eliyaJust got back from an amazing couple of weeks in Sri Lanka. Elephants, festivals, amzing people and wonderous things to see, but I thought I would just tell you about the Tea Factory Resort in Nuwara Eliya. What a gem!

Tea Factory, Nuwara Eliya

The hill country is where the world's best tea comes from, so sitting down in the games room with a cuppa, staring out over plantations is the perfect way to relax after the frenetic sightseeing of the last week.

Nuwara Eliya has spring like weather throughout the year and it has the nickname 'Little England' because of all the colonial houses. There is a fantastic lake and lots of safe walking to be done round here.

The place itself is a converted tea factory built in the days of the Raj, and the renovation has been very sympathetic to the building's character. The tea factory retains many original features.

The restaurant is housed in a fabulous old railway carriage. We were expecting excellent food and it was very good every day. We had no real complaints, but sometimes thought they had been a little to western in their cooking style. I would have prefered a little more sri lankan influence to the menu.

There are a couple of bars and a shop, and we found the atmosphere was so much better than any other hotel of a similar class. The guests were all really friendly. In short, the Tea Factory at Nuwara Eliya was fantastic. If you are thinking of taking a holiday in Sri Lanka then go ahead. The country is safer than ever and the vacaton industry has really hit a boom time. The tsunami of a year ago is still causing lots of hardship and heartbreak, but the country really needs visitors to come to sri lanka in order to get back on its feet again.
