Blenheim Palace

United Kingdom, Oxfordshire, Woodstock

The magnificent palace at Woodstock, north of Oxford, is one of England's finest days out. There really is something for all the family here and for once, that is not just marketing speak.

The Palace was given as a gift to the Duke of Marlborough by Queen Anne in 1704 for services rendered in the War of the Spanish Succession. The house really does deserve the name 'Palace' as it it without doubt one of the most beautiful houses (both inside and out) in the entire country.

Blenheim was also Winston Churchill's childhood home and so there is lots of information about this other military leader too.

The amazing parkland was landscaped by Capability Brown in the romantic style he developed and which has largely held sway ever since as the 'English' country style.

Additionally the current incumbents have built a wonderful set of pleasure grounds for visitors, which can be reached by minature railway than runs from the front entrance on a regular basis. You will find a model village, butterfly house and a large maze at the other end of the train ride.

My final point is the ice creams they sell. Wow! Almost worth the entrance fee in themselves.
