Buying a Lute
Morocco, Marrakesh, Marrakesh
However most of the Ouds sold in the markets of Marrakesh are tourist tat that will never deliver the warm rich sound that is so delightful when a lute is played proficiently.
To test for quality, actually look closely at the finish. Not just the wood, which is generally well polished, but at the seams. Are there any gaps. Is the front fretwork well done? Will the bowl split?
Now pluck a single note a number of times. Is it really clear? in the market the noise levels can be high so move further into the shop if you must. If you like what you hear, repeat the exercise up and down the fretboard before handing over any cash. Look out for dead zones caused by bad bonding in the neck.
Finally, remember to get a receipt. No, not so that you can return it, but so that you can prove to customs that it was cheap. Otherwise they may slap a hefty import tax on you (lute loot).
