Dubrovnik

Croatia, Dalmatia, Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is the regional capital of Southern Dalmatia and is a UNESCO world heritage site.

The name of Dubrovnik is derived from the Croatian word for oak trees which once surrounded the settlement.Today, the area is still exceedingly fertile, aided by Dubrovnik's typical Mediterranean climate which offers hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

The Old Town of Dubrovnik, has been extensively repaired following the disasterous balkan wars of the early 1990s but is now once more a totally stunning location well worth visiting. The maze of narrow streets and high walls are surrounded by a retaining wall which stands against the sea, protecting the inhabitants.

You can get some great hotel deals in Dubrovnik and we recommend staying in the old town itself rather than up on the hills. There are a large number of bars but the nightlife is less raucous that cities across the water in italy.

You can swim from the rocky beaches near the walls of Dubrovnik, but the water doesn't really warm up till late july.
