Garmisch
Germany, Bavaria, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch and neighbouring Partenkirchen were two quiet villages at either end of a wide valley in the Bavarian Alps until the winter Olympic games of 1936 when they were joined to provide the location for the games.
Although they have now been together as a single town for more than 70 years each still retains a little of its individual characteristics. The cobbled streets and frescos on the walls of the houses of Partenkirchen are particularly pretty, while Garmisch boasts the more vibrant nightlife and social scene.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a great ski resort for all abilities with over 100km of pistes available. They also enjoy 'langlauff' (cross country skiing) on the valley floor when the weather allows.
One of the key benefits of Garmisch as a skiing destination is the availability of accomodation and good transport to ski lifts. This keeps the cost much lower than it is at other purpose built ski resorts.
