Bunyol is a shabby town of about 9000 people where nothing much goes on for most of the year. But on the last Tuesday in August a lot of people stay up and party all night. About 30,000 visitors now decend on the town, around 40km west of the reginal capital Valencia, but it is not so much tuesday evening that everyone is here for, but the mayhem of Wednesday morning when everyone joins in a massive free for all tomato fight. Safety rules are limited to "Tomatoes must be crushed before throwing so that they don't hurt anybody." and for an hour at midday everyone throws soft tomatoes at everyone else. At 1.00pm the madness ends and the council start the horiffic job of cleaning up the mess.
