Lubeck
Germany, Schleswig-Holstein, Lubeck
Lubeck is dominated by the Holstentor, one of the four great medieval city gates that stood around the city. Later Lubeck became a city of culture with both Thomas Mann and Gunther Grass being former residents.
The city centre suffered greatly in the Second World War, but following postwar restoration Lübeck's restored historic city centre was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
However, for many Germans the city is most famous for its marzipan. The Niederegger factory's products have been wowing tastebuds for over 200 years and the Niederegger cafe in the town centre is an absolute must for anybody with the constitution to experience a full blown tutonic kaffetrinken experience.
