Rome in a day

Italy, Lazio, Rome

They call Rome The Eternal City, but many of us don't have an eternity to explore its wonders. If you are pressed for time, here are my not to be missed highlights.

Firstly Get to the Vatican early and head straight for the sistine chapel before the tourist throng arrives. Michelangelo spent four years decorating this masterpiece for Pope Julius II and it really is a great start to a day of sightseeing. Next head back in time to the Colosseum where gladiators once battled to satisfy the bloodlust of the mob and the political ambitions of Emperors and Senators. Closeby is an althogether more peaceful arena in the shape of the beautiful Pantheon. This is ancient Rome's best preserved building and when the sunlight beams down through the hole in the roof the atmosphere is incredible.

By now you will probably be exhausted, so fortify yourself with a gelato misto at the trevi fountain. Then perhaps it is time to head back to the hotel for a rest. When you are ready, put on your sharpest clothes and head out into the night which is when Rome shows another of its faces to the world. Cool, sophisitcated and fun sums up an evening in the eternal city.

This City has been a popular spot for visitors for over 2000 years. The weather remains mild throughout the winter and in summer it glories in endless sunshine. There is plenty to see and do for everybody. Whether you are seeking a romantic getaway, family vacation or a little solitude and culture, Rome does not dissappoint. On New Year's Day, the grand parade winds through the streets towards St Peter' Square. for the next 364 days of the year you will almost always find something similarly exciting going on in Rome.
