What to wear in Marrakech

Morocco, Marrakech, Marrakech

When deciding what to wear in marrakech you should think about both your comfort and the sensibilities of the local people. With temperatures that can reach the high forties, keeping cool is of prime importance. Take a lead from the local berber people who wear loose fitting robes for maximum air circulation. If you are going to be out in the sunshine, then white reflects the suns heat. However, if you are going to be sitting in the shade and a breeze over 7 miles an hour is blowing, then dark colours which radiate the heat away from the body are actually more comfortable. I know that sounds counter-intuative, but it really does work.

As well as thinking about your comfort, you do need to think of the comfort of others too. It is not a good idea to wear skimpy clothes in Marrakech. People who don't dress modestly, covering bare flesh, will upset the local population who will be shocked by, for example, a lady showing bare arms above the elbow. Although at home we can wear what we like, when we go to other people's homes we should try our best not to offend them. Long sleeved loose linen shirts are probably the best all round items of clothing for both men and women to wear in Marrakech. Good walking shoes and cotton or linen trousers are a all you really need, aside from your underwear. Don't forget to pack your swimming costume if you are staying at a riad with a pool.

The welcome you will get in morocco is warm and friendly if you take a little trouble to consider local sensibilities about dress.
